Ciaran Hurley confounded the pundits when was the surprise winner of the Bell’s Pegasus 10.5K Forest Run near Coleraine.  It was the first success in open competition for the City of Derry athlete and comes within six months of his taking up residence in Dungiven.

Formerly a member of the Togher club in Cork, Hurley would have considered himself an 800 metres specialist and boasted a modest personal best for the distance of one minute 59 seconds.

However, an excellent runner-up spot in the sixth Bob Mullan 5K of the summer prompted the insurance official to consider moving up in distance with almost instant success.

Hurley was in a fairly eclectic group of four that broke away early on.  Also cutting out the pace were Dungannon-based Delfim Pimentel originally from Angola, newcomer to the running scene Nicholas Rooke from Portstewart and Ballymena man Eddie King who at one time represented Britain over 1500 metres at the World Indoor Championships.

In an unusual game of chess on the second lap King was first to go followed by Rooke leaving the 25-year-old City of Derry recruit to successfully checkmate the African over the final four hundred metres.

At the line Hurley had a 12 seconds margin with a time of 36 minutes 7 seconds for a distance generally agreed to be 500 metres further than the advertised ten kilometres.   Rooke who was the first under 20 home took third in 36:44 with shorter distance specialist King in fourth, happy with his extended workout in 37:07.

City Of Derry’s Declan McCarthy took fifth overall in 37:36 to lift the prize for first master while Colin Loughrey led the strong Springwell squad home in seventh with a 37:55 timing.

Billy Orr was the leading Foyle Valley man in eighth a mere two seconds back of Loughrey.

Kath Alexander from Cookstown had over two minutes to spare in the women’s race with a 45:46 clocking with Mary Gribben improving one place on last year in taking second in 47:54.

Although with 88 finishers the race was about forty down on last year, the organisation by Peter Crook and his team at the Pegasus club was first class.
