20th Aug 08ROBERTS TOP MILER IN BUNCRANA

Colin Roberts was the winner of a very successful inaugural Buncrana Mile after covering the two lap course in four minutes 37 seconds. Former Irish Schools’ cross-country international Karen Crossan took the honours in the women’s race in a credible five minutes 41 seconds.

Thirty-one athletes turned for the event which was organised by brothers, Eoghan and Dara Furey, and hosted by the City of Derry Spartans club.

Roberts from the host club quickly opened up a lead over his opposition and at the tape had a comfortable five seconds buffer over Dan Mooney. The Letterkenny athlete was chased all the way to the line and had a mere second to spare over City’s rising star Eamon Colhoun.

Jackie McMonagle offered resistance to Crossan in the early stages of the women’s contest but the young Carndonagh woman had just too much speed in her legs for the City veteran.

The Inishowen athlete pulled away in emphatic fashion on the second circuit to open up a massive 15 seconds winning advantage. McMonagle held on to second with another City veteran, Bernie Ryan, showing a good turn of speed to take third in 6:11.

Robert Bigger started favourite in the Veteran Men’s mile after taking two medals in the recent Irish Masters’ Championships. However, the Aghadowey man could not handle the speed of younger rivals Derek Coogan and Joe McKinney.

Coogan, from the North Laois club, broke the tape in 5:03, just a econd ahead of Inishowen’s McKinney with Bigger clocking 5:13 in third.

The Inishowen club also supplied the winners of the juvenile’s race. Declan Donaghey was first boy across the line in 5:29 with Moya Doogan claiming the top prize in the girls’ race in 6:40.
