Former
Irish Marathon champion Pauric McKinney was the impressive winner of the third
race in the Bob Mullan 5K Series in Buncrana, sponsored by Sean Furey
Insurance, with a new record of 15 minutes 26
seconds. On its first visit outside the Derry City Council area the Series also
attracted its largest ever entry with 124 runners lining up for the start in the
Donegal resort.
At the line McKinney, who now lives in Buncrana, had 18 seconds to spare over his Letterkenny Athletics Club colleague Ciaran Doherty with Race 2 winner Gregory Roberts just a second back in third spot.
Brooke Park Leisure Centre attendant Paddy Nicell caused a major upset in winning the masters’ over 40 race from overall category leader Declan McCarthy. Nicell proved to strong for the City of Derry stalwart on the testing hill just after halfway before going on to clock a fast 16:40. McCarthy performed a damage limitation exercise by finishing just one place and seven seconds back. Foyle Valley’s Billy Orr showed he was getting back to form with a close-up third place in 17:07.
Another Foyle Valley man Seamus McCallion had his best run ever in the Series to lead home the Over 45s in 16th place with a quick 17:19. There were some other breathtaking performances from the sport’s elder statesmen. Letterkenny’s Kevin Toner was first over 55 with 17:22 mark; Noel Crumley was first over 60 in 42nd overall in 18:30 with 67 year old James Reid hot on his heels in 19:45.
Scoile Mhuire Buncrana teacher Rosaleen Campbell made an impressive return to the sport after an absence of a couple of years with a clear victory in the women’s race in 18:00. Carndonagh woman Helena Crossan showed no after affects of her recent fourth place in the Belfast Marathon by taking second in 18:25 while City of Derry’s former hockey player Sheila Bodkin broke new ground with a 19:25 clocking to lift the prize for third female.
Catherine Moran was the leading female master with a time of 19:38.
