Letterkenny athletes Michael Black (16:23) and Kevin Ferry (16:25) dominated the Babington & Croasdaile Solicitors-sponsored fourth race in the Bob Mullan Motors 5K Series in Derry. The Donegal men led from the gun and successfully held off City of Derry’s Gavin Stevenson (16:36) who made a late charge over the final kilometre. Declan McCarthy (16:50) lost out in his duel with Paddy Nicell (16:43) in the masters’ M40 race but still moved into the overall lead in the Series following a well paced sixth place overall. Michael Black wins from Kevin Ferry Further down the field Seamus McCallion (18:01) took the M45 award while Jim Breen (18:01) was the leading M50. Gerry Lynch (18:29) won the M55 section with both Noel Crumley (18:47) and James Reid (19:19) having outstanding runs in the M60s. Anne Paul (18:02) played the waiting game to perfection to take the honours in the women’s race. The City of Derry stalwart stalked Helena Crossan (18:05) for much of the race before moving away from her Carndonagh opponent down the long finishing straight. Sheelagh Bodkin (19:29) in third retained her overall lead in the Series while Jackie McMonagle (21:32) and Catherine Moran (20:19) were winners of the F35 and F40 categories. Results of the race based on age-grading will be published in the Northwest Telegraph next week. The next fixture, sponsored by Glendenning’s Jewellers, in the Series is on July 21 with entries taken at Pilot’s Row.
