For the second time this
season an Annadale Striders athlete cut lumps off the Bob Mullan Motors 5K
Series record as Paddy Hamilton recorded an excellent 14 minutes 39 at
Templemore.
Even the long drive from
Belfast to Derry after leaving his work did not prevent Hamilton from slicing
a massive 19 seconds from the mark set by Jon McKee in the opening race at
Bay Road Park.
The Lisburn man’s
Hamilton’s time was also the second fastest by a Northern Ireland athlete on
the roads this year.
Hamilton had journeyed to
the northwest on the advice of his coach Dermot Donnelly looking to finish
his summer racing programme with a flourish.
And Hamilton followed his
mentor’s instructions to the letter by hitting the front from the gun. At
the halfway point reached in 7:04 he had already opened up a 50 metres lead
over Kieran Hurley and with only an outrider on bicycle for company over the
second lap pushed on for an impressive victory.
Unfortunately, Coach
Donnelly has insisted on his charge taking a rest in advance of a long cross
country season ruling him out of last night’s Dessie’s Run at the same venue.
Hurley from the host club,
City of Derry, held on for the runner-up spot in 15:49 with Irish Schools’
Intermediate Steeplechase champion Noel Collins third with a 16:28 timing.
Letterkenny’s Margaret
Synnott Kelly was a comfortable winner of the women’s race in 18:36 ahead of
Olivia McCullagh (19:56) and Paula McGilloway (21:31).
Both overall category
winners were presented with their prizes before the start of the race. While
Shelagh Murray decided quite rightly to rest on her laurels after a long and
rewarding season, 59-year-old Toner went on to claim a fifth consecutive
victory.
However, the former
Letterkenny Post Office official had only to seconds to spare over Gerry
Lynch who made a late run to snatch second overall.
Declan McCarthy’s found
fourth in the actual race and fourth overall was good enough to give him
third place.
The minor places in the
women’s standings went to Bernie Ryan and Olivia McCullagh.
Entries for the six race Series topped 500 for the first time with 234
different runners signing up for at least one race.
