Allan Bogle was the runaway winner of the Muff Festival 5K, the fifth race in the Bob Mullan Motors 5K Series.

Bogle who won four races in the Series in 2005 had to wait until the penultimate race of this year’s fixtures to finally climb up to the winner’s place on the podium.

Bogle who took charge almost from the gun ended up over a minute clear of the rest of the field with a 16 minutes 12 seconds clocking – well outside his own course record set last year of 15:36.

The City of Derry athlete who put down the slow time to a strong headwind along the Muff-Moville road was nevertheless pleased with his victory.

Overall Series leader Dermot Connolly had his best ever result to take second place in 17:14 despite being chased down by a group of six for most of the race.

In the end just ten seconds covered places 4th – 8th with John Harkin from Ferbane in County Offaly just getting up to take third on the run-in with a respectable 17:43 timing.

Further back Kevin Toner looked to have sealed victory in the age-graded overall competition after finishing 13th in 18:16.

The women’s field in some of the past races may have been lacking a little in quality but that changed with two of the top female distance runners lining up.

In the end Anne Paul prevailed over Eimear Mullan in a fast 17:53 which was good enough to put her in 8th place overall.

Paul came to the race looking to improve her speed after a lay-off through injury but looked sharp throughout the 3.1 mile distance.

Mullan who concentrates on the Modern Pentathlon also impressed with an 18:31 clocking for 15th place of the 52 finishers.

Foyle Valley’s Bernie Ryan came through to take third some way back in 21:18.

The final race in the Series is scheduled for August 23 at Templemore with an earlier starting time of 7:30pm.
