Declan McCarthy in control at Culmore 5K (Photo: Eoghan Furey) “The old dog for the hard road and the pup for the footpath.” The well known saying was proven true again when Declan McCarthy trounced opposition in many cases less than half his age to win the fourth Bob Mullan Motors 5K of the summer. The 44-year-old accountant got his sums correct to come home 19 seconds clear of the field on a flat but breezy course in Culmore. McCarthy was always close to the front and when he put the boot down with a kilometre to go Gavin Stevenson (27) had no answer. Third place went to a fast finishing Dominic Hazlett (20) in 17:15 with Dermot Connolly in fourth holding on to his overall lead on the age-graded classification. Shelagh Murray totted up another win in the women’s race with a 19:00 clocking. Local Athletics Development Officer Aileen Morrison shook off the fatigue of recent triathlons to take second in 20:07. Olivia McCullagh showed continued signs of improvement by taking third just another three seconds back. AGE-GRADED RESULTS
