Kieran Hurley Races Into An Early Lead

Cork man Kieran Hurley was an impressive winner of the third round of the Bob Mullan 5K Series sponsored by Babington & Croasdaile.

Hurley who is married to a Dungiven woman has been living in the city for two years was a member of the City of Derry squad who scored an historic first victory in the NI cross-country during the winter season.

The former Togher athlete led the record 100-strong field by the end of the first mile before drawing away for a facile win in 15 minutes 43 seconds.

Finn Valley’s Simon Ward ran well throughout to take second in 15:56 with another Donegal man Ivan Toner holding on to third place a further second back.

Last year’s Series winner Seamus Kealey made a welcome return home from Edinburgh to claim fourth in 16:08 while Declan McCarthy was the leading master in fifth place with a 16:09 clocking.

After tasting defeat in the second race in Buncrana a week earlier, Shelagh Murray returned to winning ways in the women’s race.

The Altnagelvin dietician was always in command before coming home well clear in 18:19 from Olivia McCullagh (19:54) and Jackie McMonagle (20:10).

Kevin Toner (59) came out tops in the age-graded listings.  The Letterkenny man’s 17:54 converted to 14:31 to give him a 17 seconds advantage over Declan McCarthy (44).  James Reid (69) who won the opening fixture took third with a converted 14:50 timing.
