Jon McKee made an impressive opening to the sixth Bob Mullan Motors 5K Series in Derry setting a new record of 15 minutes 8 seconds.

The mark was eight seconds faster than Pauric McKinney’s previous mark set almost 12 months ago in Buncrana.

The 28-year-old Annadale Strider ran shoulder to shoulder with City of Derry’s Allan Bogle for the first half of the race before pulling away for an impressive 28 seconds victory.

Bogle held on for second with Omagh Harrier Jason Walsh taking third in 16:13.

Last year’s winner of the women’s Series, Shelagh Murray, picked up where she left off by leading the ladies home in 19:02.

Second place went to the local Athletics Development Officer, Aileen Morrison, in 20:00 with City’s Olivia McCullagh taking third another 15 seconds in arrears.

However, overall victory on the age-graded tables went to 69-year-old retired civil servant, James Reid, whose 19:50 timing converted to 14:41.

Murray made it a double by also scoring in the women’s age-gradings with a converted 18:49.
