Julie Butler was the leading northwest performer at the Bangor Classic 10K on Saturday. The Omagh Harrier knocked over a minute off her personal best time for the distance to finish third in a top class women’s field.

However, Butler’s 34 minutes 51 seconds clocking may not be accepted for ranking purposes with many suspecting the course was short despite assurances from the organisers that it had been measured twice in the week before the race.

While the time may be in doubt, there is no denying that the kindergarten teacher had possibly her best run over the distance to defeat some of the province’s top female stars.

Butler tracked former NI cross-country champion Suzanne McCormick for the first seven kilometres before pulling away for a clear third place.

City of Derry’s Anne Paul, also a former Ulster cross country champion, took fifth in 35:46.

Up front the race went by the form book with 18-year-old Ogla Kimaiyo from Kenya having over two minutes to spare at the tape with ostensibly a world class time of 32 minutes four seconds.

Behind her, Lagan Valley’s Jill Shannon stayed well clear of the chasing pack to take second in 34:15.

There was a shock in the men’s race when Waterside Half Marathon winner Joe McAllister proved too strong over the final kilometre for Kenya’s Joseph Kibor.

St. Malachy’s athlete clocked a personal best 28:58 with Kibor who had struggled throughout the race crossing the line eight seconds later.  Willowfield’s Paul Rowan, one of four Willowfield men in the top ten, took third in 29:30.

McAllister also had reservations as to the accuracy of the course distance.

“We passed 5K in 14:46 and although it was a fast course and we were running hard there’s still no way I came home in 14:12,” said the Glengormley man.

The £400 winner’s cheque brought McAllister’s winnings for the eight days to £900 after picking up the top prize in the Waterside the previous weekend.

Over 220 took part in the race which was making a return to the athletics calendar after a gap of nine years.

Meanwhile, Joanne English was in action at the Great North Run road races on Saturday.  The Letterkenny girl, representing Ireland, finished seventh in the U20 women’s mile in five minutes 20.1 seconds.
