Joe McAlister picked up his fourth road race victory in five weeks when he was an easy winner of yesterday’s Armagh 10 Miles in 50 minutes 36 seconds.  McAlister’s time was a new course record slicing 15 seconds off John Downes’s winning mark in 2004. Jill Shannon was an equally comfortable winner of the women’s race in 60 minutes 20 seconds.

Veteran Alan McCullough was the early leader taking a group of four which included McAlister, Thomas Frazer and Deane Fisher through the opening two miles in a healthy nine minutes 55 seconds.

The quartet remained intact for another mile but when the tempo dropped McAlister and St. Malachy’s team mate Frazer moved away.  The training partners stayed together until the windy conditions and demanding climb between five and seven miles took its toll on Frazer.

Realising that the £100 bonus for a course record was within his grasp, the Glengormley man upped the pace clocking sub-five minute miles to the finish. The game Frazer held on for second in 51:13 with another gap back to Alan McCullough held on for third in 52:25.

Shannon was always clear in the women’s race and had healthy gap at the tape over Anne Paul, runner-up in 61:57, and Cara Girvan who took the bronze medal spot in 65:58.

Last weekend also saw the City of Derry women defend their team title at the Armagh 10 Mile Road Race.  Anne Paul led the Spartans home in second place behind Lagan Valley’s Jill Shannon with a time of 61 minutes 57 seconds.

Cathy McCourt was fourth woman home in 67:32 while Karen Dolan completed the scoring trio with an eighth place finish in 73:14.

Mike Keely was the first City athlete home in the men’s race taking 15th and the prize for the second M40 in 57:56.  Gary McGee made a welcome return to form to finish an encouraging 24th in 59:29 while Stephen Joyce was the leading Springwell runner taking 36th in 61:02.
