City of Derry distance star Anne Paul continued her successful autumn road running campaign when she led the women’s field home at the inaugural Leo McCullough 10K in Dungannon. Now concentrating solely on her running, the former Irish triathlon champion had over five minutes to spare at the tape over the opposition after clocking an excellent 38 minutes two seconds for the 6.2 mile distance. Cookstown’s Karen Alexander took second in 43:30 with Culdaff resident Eilish Bell occupying the bronze medal position with a 44:44 timing. In the men’s race Delfim Pimentel recorded his second victory in a matter of weeks as he held off Donal Gallagher by seven seconds. A member of the sizeable Portuguese community in the Tyrone town, Pimentel has made frequent appearances in road races throughout the province this summer. He scored an impressive win in the South Armagh Half Marathon at the end of August before following it up with a respectable seventh in the NI championship over the same distance in Derry at the start of the month. He returned to the northwest the weekend before last and was denied victory on the run to the line in the Springwell Trail Run by City of Derry’s Ciaran Hurley. The 38-year-old Angola-born athlete did not make the same mistake on Saturday moving away from former St. Columb’s College teacher Donal Gallagher in the later stages to record 34 minutes 14 seconds. Another inveterate racer, Martin Gormley from Letterkenny, took third in 35:46 . Meanwhile, there was another change of surface for Eoghan Furey at the Slieve Gallion Mountain Race near Moneymore. It was the first run over the hills for the versatile Buncrana man who in the past twelve months has represented City of Derry on the road, the track and cross country. Well placed at the top of the 1200 foot ascent, Furey’s inexperience told on the downhill as he slipped to a sixth in 42 minutes 55 seconds, one place and 22 seconds ahead of Foyle Valley stalwart Billy Orr. Up front both Brian Ervine and Alwynne Shannon shook off the after affects of long haul flights home from the World Mountain Running Championships in New Zealand to lift the major prizes. Ervine, a Ballydrain Harrier, covered the five miles in 39 minutes 50 seconds. Larne’s Dave Spencer was 13 seconds back with Mark Alexander of Ballymena Runners taking third another nine seconds in arrears. In the women’s race Shannon, with a 48:54 clocking, led a clean sweep of the top three positions by Newcastle runners. Ann Sandford took second in 49:34 and the bronze medal spot went to Claire Galbraith in 50:04 Earlier in the day Abbey’s Paul Pollock ran out the winner of the Crawfordsburn 5K Trail Race organised by the North Down club. The Irish junior international crossed the line in 16 minutes 32 seconds with 10 seconds to spare over Ballymena Runners’ Gregory Walsh.
Lagan Valley’s Suzanne McCormick made a return to winner’s enclosure leading the women’s field home in 18:44. Lisburn’s Ruth Gibson took second in 20:55 with North Belfast Harrier Cathy Girvan a mere three seconds back in third. Dara Furey (left) brought the weekend action to a close with a fifth place in the Donegal Novice Cross Country Championship at Stranorlar.
