Seamus Kealey made light of the rain to win the final Bob Mullan Motors 5K of the season to seal his overall victory in the 2005 Series. The miserable conditions did not deter 54 starters lining up for the event which was part of the Creggan Festival. It was obvious from the gun that Kealey who only took the lead in the Series in the penultimate race was not going to let go his grip on the winner’s salver. At the end of the first two kilometre circuit he had a ten metres advantage over his nearest rival Dermot Sweeney. However, the long-striding Dungiven man kept the pressure on over the three shorter kilometre laps to extend the margin to over 100 metres at the line near the Creggan shops. Kealey’s time of 16 minute 13 seconds was not one of the fastest of the year but was more than respectable given the toughness of the course and the adverse weather. Sweeney held on to the runner-up spot both in the race and in the overall listings with a 16:36 clocking. Declan McCarthy, already assured of the M40 Series award, moved through toward the end to take third in 16:44 with young Magherafelt man Anthony Mooney taking fourth in 16:59. With nearest rival Margaret Synnott failing to make it to the start line, Shelagh Bodkin only had to go through the motions for both individual and overall victory. The Altnagelvin dietician crossed the line well clear in 18:42. There was little love lost between the sisters as Jackie McMonagle edged out Paula McGilloway for second place by a mere three seconds in 21:23. Once again the Series which has run from St. Patrick’s has proven a resounding success. A record 234 runners have taken part at the eight races with the 125 finishers in Buncrana setting new figures. Next year’s Series may however be trimmed back to six with the Brandywell event the most likely to be dropped from the roster. Return visits to new locations in Muff and Culmore will almost certainly be retained while the Templemore course could also fall from the list.
