Allan Bogle was the impressive winner of the sixth round of the Bob Mullan Motors 5K Series at Muff and sponsored by the local Festival Committee. It was Bogle’s third victory after taking the honours in the opening fixture over the City Centre course on St. Patrick’s Day and a runaway win at Culmore two and a half weeks ago. Bogle was prominent from the gun and came through running stride for stride with City of Derry clubmates, Gregory Roberts and Seamus Kealey, at the end of the opening kilometre. At the halfway point he had a thirty metres advantage over Roberts with Kealey the same distance back in third. Behind them overall Series leader Dermot Sweeney was leading the chasing group. At the tape reached in 15 minutes 36 seconds, the Eglinton school teacher had a 16 seconds advantage over Roberts. Sweeney who has improved throughout the season made a late swoop for third spot to retain his overall lead in 16:14. The masters’ competition was equally exciting with overall leader Declan McCarthy clocking an excellent 16:21 for fifth place to see off the challenge of Billy Orr (16:34). In the women’s race, Margaret Synnott claimed her second win of the Series with an emphatic gun to tape victory in 17:57. Behind the Letterkenny athlete, Shelagh Bodkin took the runner-up spot for an unbelievable fourth time to consolidate her lead in the overall standings. Bodkin’s time of 18:59 left her 63 seconds clear of debutante Lisa Tracey who was third in the Omagh Half Marathon earlier in the season. Bernie Ryan claimed the female masters’ prize with a more than respectable 21:20 timing. Action resumes on Wednesday night with the seventh race in the Series scheduled for the Balliniska circuit. Race start time is 7:30pm with entries taken at Templemore Sports Complex from 6:30 onwards. Because of the distance between the Complex at the race start outside the Springrowth Industrial Estate, entries will close 15 minutes before race time. Meanwhile, holidays abroad put paid to the hopes of Strabane Track Club and City of Derry at the Young Athletes’ League Final at Antrim Forum. Both clubs had led the respective boys’ and girls’ leagues going into the match but with northwest parents favouring this time of year for their annual break, mentors could only field little more than skeleton sides. North Down (575) saw off the challenge of Regent House (416) and Mid Ulster (332) to take the boys’ trophy with Strabane (326) back in fourth. Lagan Valley (551) were too good for North Down (452) and City of Lisburn (329) in the girls’ competition as City of Derry (263) ended up a disappointing fifth. The Templemore-based Olympian Athletics Club took sixth in both matches.
