Pauric McKinney scored his second victory in the space of eight days when he won the fourth round of the Bob Mullan Motors 5K Series sponsored by Sean Furey Insurance in Buncrana.

The previous week he had run away from a quality field take the Inter-Firms’ Race in Letterkenny and followed up with an equally impressive display in his adopted hometown – and all within a fortnight after celebrating his fortieth birthday!

McKinney’s time for the course of 15 minutes 16 seconds was not only the best ever on the course but also clipped 14 seconds off Bobby Farren’s Series record set some years ago.

At the line the Letterkenny clubman whose second child, a boy, arrived just four months ago had a comfortable 34 seconds to spare over recent Ballyshannon 5K winner James Flannigan.

Newly-crowned Donegal senior 1500 metres champion Frank Chaney showed he is as adroit on the roads by taking third pace in 16:00.

Chaney’s training partner Gerard Bogle took the masters’ award after seeing off the challenge of Declan McCarthy while Tirchonnaill’s John Cannon was the leading M45 and Jim Breen consolidated his lead in the M50 section.  Other age group category prizes went to Jimmy Shields (M55), Noel Crumley (M60) and evergreen Jim Hynds (M65).

There was a course record in the women’s race as well with Clodagh McCool winning in 17:39 and reversing the Inter-Firms’ finishing positions with Helena Crossan on the home straight.  Crossan’s 17:46 was also excellent while Shelagh Bodkin held on to the overall lead in the Series with third in 18:56.

Rosemary Bogle was the leading female master.

As well as being part of the Bob Mullan Series, the race was also one of the Donegal Grand Prix series which boosted the starting field. In the end 124 runners crossed the finish line making it the largest 5K in the North outside Belfast.

The Series will now move to Muff for the next round on July 1 and will form part of the local festival that weekend.
