In the men’s race four men were locked together for most of the race with Jason Walsh only managing to get clear of master competitor Declan McCarthy in the final 600 metres while Eimear Mullan turned in a masterly performance in the women’s contest. Dominic Hazlett was the early leader as the 52 runners went down through the park for the first time. The 19-year-old was overhauled before the end of the first lap of three as Walsh, McCarthy, last year’s runner-up Kevin Ferry and Colin Loughrey moved to the front. Declan McCarthy (402) and Kevin Ferry (132) Ferry and McCarthy did most of the forcing during the second lap and as they went out for the final circuit it was anybody’s race. Ferry looked to be getting away at one time but was quickly caught again by McCarthy and Walsh as Loughrey started to fade. Going down the park with a half a mile to run it was Walsh who looked the strongest but McCarthy and Ferry were still in contact. The Omagh Harrier kept the pressure on to the line where he had just four seconds to spare over McCarthy in a time of 16 minutes 16 seconds with Ferry the same margin back in third. Loughrey took fourth in 16:38, two seconds ahead of Marty Gormley with Dermot Sweeney completing the top six in 17:02. It was the first local success for Walsh who now lives in Omagh but is a native of Hayes, Middlesex. He is a former member of Hillingdon Athletics Club and relocated over here after marrying a Gortin woman.
Little was heard of her until she returned from university across the water and popped up to win the Prom Mile in Portstewart late last month. On this occasion she ran a relaxed first half of the race before putting her foot on the gas to move away from the women’s field for an impressive victory in a fast 17 minutes 41 seconds. Shelagh Bodkin continued the role of bridesmaid by taking the runner-up spot for the third consecutive time in the Series with a personal best 18:37 while Race 2 winner Margaret Synnott had to settle for third spot on this occasion in 18:50.
