Former Irish international Ann-Marie Larkin was a comfortable winner of the women’s race with 2004 Series winner Declan McCarthy leading the veteran men home in an excellent third place overall. Allan Bogle well clear - Photo: Noel Crumley Bogle was first to the front as the 63-strong field negotiated Foyle Street after the start on Water Street. By the end of the first circuit he was 40 metres clear of surprise packet Aaron Doherty and Seamus Kealey with McCarthy making significant progress after a slow start. Already Ann-Marie Larkin was in control of women’s contest over Shelagh Bodkin and Jackie McGilloway. Bogle had doubled his lead as he came through in 10 minutes 58 seconds with a lap to run while Kealey had moved into a clear second with McCarthy making rapid headway toward a podium spot. The winner received a tumultuous reception as he crossed the finish line in the Guildhall Square with a comfortable 24 seconds to spare over Kealey who had was made to sprint all the way to the line by McCarthy with just a second separating them at the tape. Gary McGee showed signs he is getting into top form to take fourth in 17:10 with Aaron Doherty holding on for fifth in 17:16 and Paddy Nicell clocking 17:23 to complete the top half dozen. Further down the field, former Sparta star Tommy Farrell, a member of the winning 1990 national road relay team, made an impressive comeback after an absence of some years to break 19 minutes. It was also Ann-Marie Larkin’s first race in some months
after injury. Now based in Strabane where she lives with The Mayor Gearoid O’hEara presented the prizes in the Guildhall Square where Gerry Lynch, Honorary Secretary of the organisers, City of Derry Athletics Club, also expressed appreciation to the NI Police Service, sponsors and voluntary helpers for making the event a success.
