The ladies of City of Derry’s dominated the Northern Ireland Veterans’ Association women’s trial for the British & International Cross-Country International in Scotland next month.

Anne Paul showed no after-affects from a recent Ironman Triathlon on the Continent when she forged into an early lead from the gun.

With the race being run simultaneous to the U18 boys’ contest and the men’s over 65 trial, the former NI senior champion was able to match strides with the leading youths for the first two laps.

Although Mark Law from the Ballymena Runners’ Club and Willowfield’s Andrew Jordan moved away on the final circuit, by that stage the UUC leisure centre manager had been dragged well clear of the female opposition.

At the line she had built up a 60 seconds lead over Hannah Shields with Shelagh Murray grabbing third to seal a cleansweep of the top three places by City of Derry athletes.

However, the Portrush-based Spartan has yet to confirm that she will be available to lead the Province’s over 40s in Falkirk although it is fairly certain that Hannah Shields Shelagh Murray to boost the over 40 and over 35 teams respectively.

Further down the field sisters Jacqueline McMonagle (F35) and Paula McGilloway (F40) should have done enough to seal selection.

Three of Spartan men will almost certainly be making the short trip across the channel after solid performances in the men’s trial which was completely dominated by Alan McCullough.

The Willowfield Harrier who took an individual silver medal in the international last year went to the front from the gun.  By the end of the five muddy laps around the Billy Neill Soccer Centre he had built up a huge winning margin of one minute and 50 seconds.

Behind him Declan McCarthy took a creditable 10th place despite being diagnosed with having Shingles only days before.

Although only the eighth over 40 over the line it is likely that at least two of those ahead of him will not be eligible for selection.

But while the Kilfennan accountant may have have an anxious couple of days wait until the teams are announced, Gerry Lynch (M60) and Dermot Connolly (M45) can start packing immediately after finishing first and second in their respective categories.

There was success too for Foyle Valley’s Damian McGinty won the over 45 category but will be unavailable for the trip and Sammy McAnaney who was second over 50.

The biggest cheer of day was reserved for Springwell’s James Reid.   Sporting a buttonhole badge on his vest with a motif “I am seven” meaning of course seventy, the retired civil servant from Limavady celebrated his birthday in style with a comfortable win in the over 65 race.

Ulster Novice Title for City of Derry Men

City of Derry athletes picked up their first championship medals of the winter when the club’s novice men picked up the Ulster team title at Killybegs.

The City slickers found the firm going of the Fintra course to their liking as they put their four scorers in the top 15 positions to see off the challenge of Omagh Harriers for the gold medals.

Andy Maguire had his best race ever in the red and black vest to lead the Spartans home in 7th place.

Emmett McGinty, son of the well known veteran runner Damian McGinty, made an auspicious debut in City colours to take eighth.

Behind the leading pair top triathlete Paul McCafferty and Dara Furey worked hard to nail down 14th and 15th spots.

The City score of 44 points was 11 points superior to their Omagh rivals with Bailieboro well back in the bronze medal position.

Oran McBride (17th) and Kevin Carlin (21st) provided valuable back-up to the four scorers.

City’s Cathy McDermott, the only local representative in the women’s novice race, turned in a fine performance in his first attempt at the event to finish sixth.

Marcus Christie turned in the top effort for the Spartans in the under age events taking sixth in the U17 boys’ race behind Finn Valley’s exciting young prospect Ian Ward.
